Transgender Inclusion is the New Lavender
Graduating into a world that no longer celebrates you
On May 15th, 2025, I joined my brother Sundeep (I call him Sunny) at Hofstra University, where he was delivering a keynote speech to a room full of LGBTQ+ graduates. I was surprised to see that their Lavender Graduation ceremony was still happening, especially since several other universities have already canceled theirs in response to the federal crackdown on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
Lavender Graduations, first held at the University of Michigan in 1995, were created to celebrate the accomplishments of LGBTQ+ students as they prepare to step into the next chapter of their lives. These ceremonies are powerful acts of recognition and resistance. At a time when LGBTQ+ students, especially transgender youth, are being erased from curriculums and campus spaces, these moments of visibility matter more than ever.
As I documented his speech, one part stood out as something that will resonate with LGBTQ+ graduates across the country:
Whether or not your college or university is holding a lavender graduation, know that we see you. We honor you. And, most importantly, we are so glad you are here.
